Promoted Hull beat Manchester United 2-0 on the Premier League's opening weekend

Hull City, back in the Premier League for the first time since 2017, beat Manchester United 2-0 at the MKM Stadium on Saturday. Both goals came from centre-backs in the first half: Semi Ajayi poked in after Senne Lammens pushed out Oli McBurnie's shot in the 17th minute, and Nobel Mendy headed in a free-kick in the 38th, Malay Mail reported. Hull were without 10 injured players.

Al Jazeera, using AFP, called it a humiliating start for a United side expected to challenge for the title after finishing third. Debutants Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos were “anonymous”, it said, and Michael Carrick, now permanent manager, has been asking for more signings; a deal for Brighton's Carlos Baleba has been agreed. Malay Mail carried Alan Shearer's verdict on the BBC.

The Guardian looked at the bigger picture, saying United have been stuck in football's version of “purgatory” since Sir Alex Ferguson retired 13 years ago. They have now lost their opening game for the fourth time in seven seasons.

How each outlet framed it

  • Malay Mail — the goals, Hull's injury list and the pundits.
  • Al Jazeera (AFP) — Carrick under pressure and the transfer market.
  • The Guardian — a long decline at Old Trafford.

Where the numbers differ: AFP called it Hull's first win over United since 2017. The Guardian said it was Hull's first Premier League win over United, and that they had not beaten them in 52 years.
