Any tips for my first trip to a cold country in winter?

I've lived in Singapore my whole life and the coldest thing I've experienced is a shopping mall. In December I'm going to visit a friend somewhere it actually snows.

What should I pack, and what do people from hot countries always get wrong? I'd rather learn from your mistakes than make my own.
