Back to school: how do you all handle kids' gaming time?

Schools are back here and our house rules are under review again. My youngest is 12 and argues like a barrister. Right now it's one hour on school nights, more at weekends. He says that's "basically illegal".

What works in your house? Timers? Earned time? Do you let them play with friends online during the week? Is there a point where you stop setting rules?
