271 days on a pig kidney, then a human transplant! The bridge idea works!
I've been following xenotransplant news for years and this one made my day! Tim Andrews, 66, got a kidney from a gene-edited pig named Wilma, stayed off dialysis for a record 271 days, and then got a human kidney that's working well after six months!
He had only a 9% chance of getting a human kidney within five years. So the pig kidney wasn't the final answer, it was the bridge. And that's exactly how this could help people on the waiting list right now!
Wilma had 69 edits to her genome. 69! The science here is incredible.
