Salary ranges in job ads: are they actually helping workers?

More job ads now show a pay range, which sounds great. But half the ones I see are like "$60k–$140k", which tells me absolutely nothing.

And I've heard people argue it can push pay toward the middle, because companies don't want to post a high number that existing staff will see and get angry about.

I want to believe transparency helps. I'm just not sure the version we got is the useful one. Has it changed anything for you when job hunting?
