When I was young, September in Japan was cool. Is it the same where you live?

I am retired teacher, I remember school sports day in late September in long sleeves. Now my grandchildren have sports day and everyone worries about heatstroke.

Is my memory wrong? Or is September really different now? I want to know about other countries too. What do your parents and grandparents say?
