in Brazil voting is mandatory. how it work in your country?

In Brazil we must vote from 18 to 70. If you don't vote and don't justify, you pay small fine and can have problem with some documents. We use electronic machine, results come very fast, same night.

I want to know: in your country is it mandatory? Do you think it is good idea? I am not sure myself.
