why is rent crazy in EVERY city?? is it the same where you are?

I'm an architect in Madrid and even I can't afford to live near the studio I design flats for. My friends in Lisbon, Berlin, Seoul, all say the same thing.

So what is it really? Tourist flats? Investors? Not enough building? Interest rates? Everyone has a different answer and I'm confused. What do you think is the main reason in your city?
