Is doing a PhD abroad still worth it these days?

I'm a researcher in Daejeon thinking about applying for a PhD abroad next year. When I started, the US was the obvious choice for my field. Now I'm not so sure. Funding is competitive everywhere, visas feel complicated, and I'm not sure I want to spend five years far from family.

For people who studied abroad (or decided not to), what would you tell your younger self? Is it still worth it?
