Ramos's last-second penalty beats England 48-46 and wins France the Six Nations

France retained the Six Nations title on Saturday, 14 March, beating England 48-46 at the Stade de France with a penalty by Thomas Ramos in the final moments. England had led 46-45 at 82 minutes 46 seconds, The Sports Dragon reported. Ireland, who beat Scotland in Dublin earlier in the day, had been close to the trophy until that kick.

A PA review of the championship, carried by the Express & Star, said England scored six tries in Paris but finished with only one win, the first time that has happened in Six Nations history, after arriving unbeaten in 11 Tests. Captain Maro Itoje said the way they played in Paris was how they wanted to play from now on. PA also reported that coach Steve Borthwick faces an RFU inquiry.

Elsewhere, Wales won for the first time in the Six Nations since 2023, and Italy beat both England and Scotland. PA said the tournament set a record for tries and expected France wing Louis Bielle-Biarrey to be named player of the championship.

The Sports Dragon, a Welsh rugby site, headlined France as champions but “Slamless”, noting that they had suffered a heavy defeat at Murrayfield the weekend before.

How each outlet framed it

  • PA (via Express & Star) — lessons for every team, above all England's collapse.
  • The Sports Dragon — a title won in the last second, but no Grand Slam.

What we don't know yet: what the RFU inquiry means for Borthwick, with a South Africa Test next on England's schedule.
