How do you manage when your parents are old and live far away?

My mother is 81 and she live alone in our hometown, about 1,000 km from me. She refuse to move, she say her friends and temple are there and I understand. But every phone call I worry.

For those in similar situation, what actually help? Neighbours checking, a helper, technology, or you just accept the worry? I like to hear different countries way of doing it.
