Phone bans in schools - does it actually work or just feel good?

My nephew's school has started collecting phones at the gate every morning. Parents in our family group chat are divided like anything.

One side says kids finally talk to each other at lunch, less bullying online during class. Other side says it is just making the kids sneak, and in emergency the parent cannot reach.

I can see both points honestly. For those who have kids or are teachers, what you are seeing on the ground? Not interested in the headlines, more in real experience.
