Animal Crossing 3.0 lands a day early: a free hotel update and a $5 Switch 2 upgrade
Nintendo released Animal Crossing: New Horizons Update 3.0 and its Nintendo Switch 2 Edition on 14 January, a day ahead of the planned 15 January date, Shacknews reported. The update is free on both Switch and Switch 2; the Switch 2 Edition costs $5 and runs only on the newer console.
The free update, detailed by Inverse when it was announced in October 2025, adds a hotel run by Kapp'n's family where players decorate themed rooms and earn hotel tickets, mannequins whose outfits visiting friends can wear, a Slumber Island reached at bedtime, and Nintendo collaborations, including Zelda and Splatoon items and villagers. The Switch 2 Edition brings higher resolution, a mouse mode with the Joy-Cons for decorating, pattern design and drawing on the bulletin board, online play for up to 12 people, voice and video chat, and a megaphone that calls villagers by name.

How each outlet framed it
- Shacknews — launch-day news: the surprise early release, the free-versus-paid split and a live stream to test it.
- Inverse — a feature-by-feature guide, calling the mouse mode “a simple but huge improvement” and the Nintendo collaborations the unexpected part.
What we don't know yet: Neither outlet had player reaction or sales figures on launch day. Inverse noted that fans who miss the odder, meaner villagers of earlier games may still be disappointed.
