Crowd crush basics: what research says about density (re: Kolkata)
After the Kolkata pavilion crush, I read about crowd safety research. A few points that are widely accepted among researchers, explained simply. I am not an expert, so please correct me.
1. Density is the main danger. When people are packed tightly, individuals cannot control their movement. Pressure travels through the crowd, and people can be hurt even when nobody is 'pushing'.
2. A sudden trigger plus a narrow space is a common pattern. In the reports, a sudden downpour sent people into the pavilion for shelter, and one report mentions an announcement that caused confusion, in narrow lanes.
3. 'Stampede' is often the wrong word. Researchers often say 'crush', because it is usually not people running over others in panic, but pressure from density.
Linked: the first report with the toll at 17. Another report gave 19.
