Simple summary of the UK Covid care home report, for slow English readers
I read the GONOM post about the UK Covid inquiry and the care homes. English is not my first language, so I made short notes for myself. Maybe it help someone else.
The report is 287 pages. It says the government did not protect care homes well, and the care sector was like an 'afterthought'. More than 43,000 care home deaths with Covid were recorded from March 2020 to July 2022.
Problems: not enough PPE, some workers used bin bags and ponchos. Patients were sent from hospital to care homes. Some 'do not resuscitate' decisions were made because of age or disability, without looking at the person. The report says this was unacceptable.
It recommends: safe isolation after hospital, money support so care staff can stay home when sick, and visiting rules based on the right to see family.
