Ubisoft reportedly cancels Alterra, its Animal Crossing-style sim, after three years

Ubisoft has cancelled Alterra, a social life sim in the style of Animal Crossing that it never officially announced, according to a report by Insider Gaming relayed on 21 April by ComicBook and Italy's Multiplayer.it. The game had been in development for about three years at Ubisoft Montreal, led by creative director Patrick Redding and producer Fabien Lhéraud.

Alterra was described as a voxel-art game with Minecraft-like gathering and building, biomes to explore and NPCs that looked like Funko Pop figures. Notebookcheck said staff were sent home for the day after being told, that no layoffs had been announced and that workers were moved to other projects. ComicBook counted it as Ubisoft's seventh cancelled game of 2026, after six were cut in January.

How each outlet framed it

  • ComicBook — the count of cancellations, noting it had not confirmed the report itself and wondering whether the moment for such a game had passed.
  • Multiplayer.it — the game's design, and an open question about the support teams who also worked on it.
  • Notebookcheck — Ubisoft's general statement on cutting projects, set against the reveal of Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced.

Where the details differ: ComicBook and Multiplayer.it reported the news on 21 April, while Notebookcheck said staff were told on 22 April. Ubisoft has not directly confirmed the cancellation.
