How to keep basil alive on balcony? Mine always die

Every spring I buy basil from supermarket. I put it on my balcony in Bologna. After two weeks it is dead. My wife says I kill it with love because I give too much water.

Maybe she is right, maybe not. What do you do? I want pesto this summer, not a funeral.
