China Q3 in four numbers (and why the headline isn't the whole story)

Pulling the key figures from the GONOM post so people don't have to dig:

4.5% year-on-year growth in Q3, up from 4.3% in Q2. Nine months: 4.6%, inside the 4.5–5% target.

16%+ export growth over three quarters, mostly chips and tech linked to the AI boom.

1.1% retail sales growth in September (2.6% over nine months).

-7.2% fixed-asset investment, Jan–Sept. That's property, factories, machinery.

My read: strong headline, weak engine at home. Al Jazeera led with the domestic weakness, SCMP with the target. Both are true. The open question from the piece is whether AI-chip demand holds into 2027.
