Pulitzer books 2026: a one-sentence war novel, Lepore's Constitution and Yiyun Li's grief
The 2026 Pulitzer Prizes were announced on Monday, May 4. In fiction, the prize went to Daniel Kraus for Angel Down, a First World War story told in one long sentence, PBS News reported. Kraus, 50, has written fantasy, horror and young-adult novels and has worked with filmmakers George Romero and Guillermo del Toro. Each book winner receives $15,000.
The board called the novel “a stylistic tour de force that blends such genres as allegory, magical realism and science fiction into a cohesive whole.” — via The Daily Star
The other book winners were Jill Lepore's We the People: A History of the U.S. Constitution (history), Amanda Vaill's Pride and Pleasure: The Schuyler Sisters in an Age of Revolution (biography), Yiyun Li's Things in Nature Merely Grow (memoir), Juliana Spahr's Ars Poeticas (poetry) and Brian Goldstone's There Is No Place for Us: Working and Homeless in America (general nonfiction). Bess Wohl's Liberation, a memory play about 1970s feminist consciousness-raising groups, won drama.
Bangladesh's The Daily Star read the books as a set about how the past still shapes the present, and quoted the board describing Li's book, about the suicides of her two sons, as “an austere and defiant memoir of acceptance”. Australia's trade magazine Books+Publishing listed the winners under international awards with the publishers that sell them outside the US, such as Titan, Fourth Estate and John Murray.
How each outlet framed it
- PBS News — the genre writer behind the fiction prize, and Broadway timing for Liberation.
- The Daily Star — a shared theme of history and loss, with the board's citations.
- Books+Publishing — a booksellers' list with non-US publishers.
Where the details differ: The Daily Star lists Angel Down under its US publisher Atria Books; Books+Publishing names Titan, its British publisher. The same split appears for Li (Farrar, Straus and Giroux vs Fourth Estate) and Lepore (Liveright vs John Murray).
