Bulgaria's Dara wins Eurovision in Vienna with 'Bangaranga' as the UK finishes last
Bulgaria won the Eurovision Song Contest in Vienna with “Bangaranga”, performed by Dara, who scored 516 points in the grand final on 16 May at the Wiener Stadthalle, according to Eurovisionworld. The United Kingdom's entry, Look Mum No Computer, finished last with a single point.
Riviera Radio, based in Monaco, described a “closely fought contest” in which Dara, full name Dara Nikolaeva Yotova, beat strong competition from Israel. It said the UK act narrowly avoided the dreaded “nul points”.
Eurovisionworld put the result in the context of a smaller contest. Only 35 countries took part and 25 competed in the final, which it called the lowest number since semi-finals were introduced in 2004. Iceland, Ireland, the Netherlands, Slovenia and Spain stayed away in protest at Israel being allowed to compete.
How each outlet framed it
- Riviera Radio — a short results story: Bulgaria on top, Israel close behind, and another bad night for the UK at the bottom of the table.
- Eurovisionworld — the scoreboard and the politics: a boycott over Israel's place in the contest left the number of competing countries at its lowest since 2004.
Where the accounts differ: Riviera Radio's report says the contest was held on Sunday, while Eurovisionworld dates the final to Saturday, 16 May. Riviera Radio did not give point totals.
