Buying a used EV: how do I check the battery isn't half dead?

Looking at a 5-year-old used EV because new ones are out of my budget. The dealer says the battery is 'fine'. What does fine even mean? Is there a number I should ask for?

Can I get an independent check? Does fast-charging history matter? Do batteries degrade faster in hot states? And is a replacement battery as expensive as people say, or is that a myth now?

Any help appreciated before I sign anything.
