Japan's food bill in June: 1,078 price hikes return as rice inflation nearly stops

Japanese shoppers face a mixed picture going into summer. Jiji Press reported on May 29 that major food makers plan price increases on 1,078 items in June, according to a Teikoku Databank survey of 195 companies. That is the first time in two months the count has passed 1,000 and about 13 times May's total, though still 44.4% below a year earlier. Seasonings lead with 450 items, followed by 304 processed foods; Myojo Foods' Ippeichan yakisoba cup noodles go from 254 yen to 272 yen.

Makers are passing on higher packaging and energy costs amid uncertainty in the Middle East, Jiji said, and planned hikes for January to October already total 9,361 items.

At the same time, the staple that drove last year's anger is calming down. Trading Economics, summarising official April data released on May 21, said rice prices rose just 0.6% year on year, down sharply from 6.8% in March and the slowest gain since a decline in November 2022. Overall food inflation eased to 3.5%, the mildest since October 2024.

How each outlet framed it

  • Jiji Press — the company-by-company count of coming hikes and the Middle East cost pressure.
  • Trading Economics — the official inflation figures, item group by item group.

Where the numbers differ: They measure different things. Teikoku Databank counts planned price rises by makers, while the inflation data shows what prices already did in April. Fewer rice increases and more packaged-food increases can both be true.
