In France everyone disappears in August. Is it the same where you live?

Already in June my colleagues are talking only about their August holidays. In Paris many small shops close for 2 or 3 weeks with a little sign on the door. As HR, I can tell you planning anything in August is impossible.

In your country, do people take one long holiday or many short ones? Do shops close? I am curious how other countries do it.
