Architect's view: what actually makes a street feel safe at night

I get asked about this a lot, so here is what is generally accepted in urban design. Not perfect rules, but good start.

1. Eyes on the street. An old idea from Jane Jacobs: windows, doors and shops facing the street mean people are watching, even without knowing it. Blank walls feel dangerous.

2. Lighting at human height. Very bright tall lights can make deep shadows. Many smaller lights at the level of people are often better.

3. Mixed use. If a street has homes, cafés and shops, someone is around at most hours. Office-only streets die at 7pm.

4. Clear sightlines. You should see where you are going, and see the exit.

Which streets in your city feel safe or unsafe at night, and do these points match?
