Simple guide: parliamentary vs presidential systems (written for my nephew)
My nephew had homework on this and the textbook made it very confusing, so I wrote this for him and thought maybe it helps someone here too.
Presidential: people elect the president directly (or almost directly). The president leads the government and is also head of state. Parliament is separate and cannot easily remove the president. Examples: USA, Korea, Brazil, Mexico.
Parliamentary: people elect parliament, and the government comes from the majority in parliament. The prime minister can lose their job if parliament stops supporting them. Head of state is often a king or a ceremonial president. Examples: UK, Japan, India, Germany.
Semi-presidential: both a strong president and a prime minister. France is the famous one.
