do smart meters save money or just show you how much you're losing?

Got one fitted last year. It has a little display that shows my usage in pounds per hour. For the first week I stared at it while boiling the kettle. Since then it's been living in a drawer.

Is there any evidence people use less once the novelty wears off? Or is the real benefit for the grid side, time-of-use tariffs and so on, rather than for households? Genuinely don't know.
