Are wifi baby monitors safe? Thinking of buying one

We have used a simple audio baby monitor since our son was born. Now he is 2 and moving to his own room, and we are thinking of one with a camera and an app.

I have read stories about strangers accessing cameras in people's homes. How common is that, really? And what should I check before buying: encryption, a local-only mode, the company's update record?

I would prefer facts more than fear. Thanks.
