Germany lose to Ecuador and still top the group. format too forgiving?

Day 15 was a funny one. USA lose to Turkey in stoppage time, Germany lose 2-1 to Ecuador, and both of them still win their groups. Outlook called Ecuador's win one of the biggest upsets of the tournament, but it didn't really cost Germany anything.

Before the tournament people here said wait and see on 48 teams. Well, I waited. When the big sides lose and nothing changes, the last group games start to feel like friendlies.

On the other hand Japan and Sweden both going through from their group was good fun to watch. So maybe I'm being harsh. What do you think?
