Summer windows open = hearing every neighbour's life. How do you cope?

It's that time of year again. Too hot to sleep with the windows shut, but the moment they're open I can hear the couple across the courtyard arguing about the dishwasher, someone's football commentary, and a baby who has clearly decided sleep is optional.

I don't want to be the person who complains, because I'm sure they can hear my kettle and my terrible singing too. But I'd love to know how people in flats deal with it. Earplugs? Fans as white noise? Just accepting it as part of summer?
