honest question for europeans: do you actually need AC now?

Growing up in Poland nobody had air conditioning at home. You opened windows at night and that was it. This summer I've seen more people in my building buying portable units than ever.

I can see both sides. It helps old people and babies a lot. But it also uses a lot of power and pushes heat outside. Curious what people in other countries do, especially places where AC is normal already.
