Two helicopters collide over Oregon field: three dead, highway shut near McMinnville

Three people were killed on Thursday afternoon, October 29, when two helicopters collided in mid-air near McMinnville airport in Oregon's Yamhill County. BBC News reported that the aircraft were a Robinson R22 and an Airbus helicopter, and that both came down in a field beside a highway.

The Hindu, carrying a wire report, said the two aircraft were carrying three people and that the Oregon Department of Transportation closed Highway 233 about 1.6km west of Dayton, with no estimate for reopening. Hindustan Times was first in this set, with a report on the closure of the highway in both directions while the collision was still unconfirmed, and later named two of the three people who died. By Friday evening it described the dead as an experienced pilot, an instructor and a student.

That description suggests at least one aircraft was on a training flight, but none of the reports said what either helicopter was doing at the moment of impact.

How each outlet framed it

  • BBC News — the aircraft types and the crash site.
  • The Hindu — the people on board and the disruption on the road.
  • Hindustan Times — rapid local updates, then the identities of those who died.

What we don't know yet: the cause, and whether either helicopter was in contact with the airport at the time.
