Japan's 'defense-oriented' message in Cebu: who is it actually for?
From the ASEAN defence post: Koizumi reassures ASEAN that Japan's policy remains 'defense-oriented', while China accuses Japan of 'accelerated remilitarization'. Same week, Koizumi and Hegseth commit to more realistic joint drills with China in mind.
I'm trying to see it from both sides. To Southeast Asian governments, Japan wants to look like a steady partner, not a threat. To Washington, it wants to look serious. Those two audiences want slightly different things, and I'm not sure one speech can satisfy both.
Meanwhile India pitched itself as a counter-terror partner. Interesting that the two outlets basically covered different meetings.
