Christa Pike speaks a month after a failed execution: pain, 'incompetence' and gratitude

Christa Pike, the Tennessee death row inmate who survived an execution attempt by lethal injection on September 30, has made her first public statement. The Hindu reports that she survived two doses of pentobarbital as the state tried to execute her for the 1995 stabbing death of a classmate.

South China Morning Post said she still struggles to speak, never contemplated a life beyond her execution date and was prepared to die in peace, but woke up alone and confused in a hospital bed, a failure she blamed on “incompetence”. BBC News led on those words, “confused and in pain”. France 24 highlighted two other parts of her statement: gratitude to those who saved her life, and a call for compassion for her victim's family. RTÉ said she was thankful for the love and support she had received.

How each outlet framed it

  • Hindustan Times — her blame on official “incompetence”.
  • The Hindu — the facts of the failed execution and her crime.
  • South China Morning Post — her account of waking up in hospital.
  • BBC News — confusion and pain.
  • France 24 — gratitude, and words for the victim's family.
  • RTÉ — the pain “in my mind and soul”.
  • CNA — constant physical pain.

What we don't know yet: whether Tennessee will try to execute her again; none of the reports said.
