Flávio Bolsonaro flees to the US and claims the presidency for 58 minutes
Brazilian Senator Flávio Bolsonaro left Brazil for the United States after losing Sunday's presidential runoff to Lula. The Hindu, citing reports, said he arrived in the US on October 27. It later reported that he slipped out via Argentina and Ecuador after being ordered to surrender his passports because of several investigations, and that an airline said his plane was paid for from a US bank.
Hindustan Times carried a report that Donald Trump helped him leave and arranged a temporary stay, and that he landed in Miami. The Guardian said that for 58 minutes he declared himself “Brazil's true president-elect” on social media, in a letter bearing the wrong coat of arms, and that Brazilian newspapers responded with scorn. RTÉ reported that a close ally blamed ChatGPT for the wording of the letter.
“Amateur morons” — one of the reactions in Brazilian media, via The Guardian
Al Jazeera reported that Brazil summoned an Argentinian diplomat over the flight, a move that could further strain relations between Lula and Argentina's president, Javier Milei.
How each outlet framed it
- The Hindu — the escape route and who paid for the plane.
- Hindustan Times — the US angle: a reported role for Trump.
- The Guardian — the reaction in Brazil: a claim to the presidency met with ridicule.
- RTÉ — the ChatGPT defence.
- Al Jazeera — the diplomatic fallout with Argentina.
What we don't know yet: The reported help from Trump rests on unnamed sources, and none of the reports includes a White House response.
