Singapore's haze eases: from runners in shopping malls to 'good-to-moderate' air

Air quality in Singapore has returned to the good-to-moderate range as the haze from Indonesia's fires eases, CNA reports. The Meteorological Service Singapore expects the situation to keep improving as inter-monsoon conditions set in, a period that usually brings lighter winds and more frequent showers.

It has been a hard month. Smoke from wildfires in neighbouring Indonesia pushed Singapore's air quality to its worst levels in more than a decade in recent weeks, cancelling outdoor activities, the South China Morning Post reported. Runners, including some training for international events, turned to air-conditioned shopping malls to keep exercising.

The Japan Times reported that rain in Indonesia was set to ease the toxic haze in both Singapore and Malaysia, after Indonesia's worst fire season in years sent smoke drifting across neighbouring countries for weeks.

How each outlet framed it

  • South China Morning Post — daily life under the haze: runners swapping streets for malls.
  • The Japan Times — the regional view: rain in Indonesia easing haze in Singapore and Malaysia.

What we don't know yet: whether the haze will return if dry weather comes back before Indonesia's fires are fully out.
