Bungie's road to a 'new, forever Destiny': old campaigns return, no Destiny 3 tease this year

Bungie has set out how it plans to rebuild Destiny, starting by bringing content back from the Destiny “vault”. GameSpot reported on 30 October that fan-favourite campaigns such as the Red War and Forsaken will be reworked into Destiny 2, though not for quite a while.

The studio also lowered expectations for the end of the year.

“…don't expect us to make a Destiny announcement at the TGAs this year, or to randomly drop a logo that sets the world on fire right away” — Bungie, via GameSpot

Kotaku summarised the plan under Bungie's own phrases, a “true reset moment” leading toward a “new, forever Destiny”, and said players should not expect Destiny 2 to feel whole again before 2028.

IGN covered the fan reaction: as Destiny players looked for ways to support the studio's future, head of product Josh Deane said they do not need to “buy Marathon as a donation”.

How each outlet framed it

  • GameSpot — the plan's content, and the clear “not at The Game Awards” message.
  • Kotaku — the long timeline, and Bungie working with “the cards it's been dealt”.
  • IGN — the community: fans trying to help, and Bungie telling them not to buy its other game out of loyalty.

What we don't know yet: release dates for the returning campaigns, and whether the “new home” Bungie mentions is a Destiny 3.
