Nintendo's profit doubles on a tariff refund as Switch 2 sales fall 34% to 3.82 million
Nintendo sold 3.82 million Switch 2 consoles in April–June, the first quarter of its fiscal year, bringing the total since launch to about 23.68 million, Shacknews reported on 6 August. That is down 34% from the 5.82 million sold in the same quarter a year earlier, when the console launched, but up from 2.49 million in the previous quarter.
Nintendo Everything reported net sales of 517.8 billion yen, down 9.5%, while operating profit rose about 150% to 142.5 billion yen. It linked part of the jump to “the refund of IEEPA tariffs in the US”, and reported digital sales up 90% to 132.7 billion yen. Switch 2 software sold 9.46 million units in the quarter and 58.17 million in total, while the original Switch reached 156.59 million consoles. Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream, on the original Switch, had sold 7.94 million units.
“Many consumers continued to adopt the system, encouraged by the release of new titles and other factors.” — Nintendo, via Shacknews
Shacknews added that Nintendo said Switch 2 sell-through remained ahead of the original Switch's early years, despite a price increase in Japan.
How each outlet framed it
- Shacknews — the hardware trend: lower than launch year, higher than last quarter.
- Nintendo Everything — the full results table, the tariff refund and the coming Switch 2 line-up, from Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave to an Ocarina of Time remake.
Where the numbers differ: the 34% fall compares with the Switch 2's launch quarter, an unusually strong base; against the quarter just before, sales rose.
