cycling politicians: normal here, strange everywhere else?

In the Netherlands seeing a minister on a bike is not news, it is just Tuesday. My colleagues from abroad always find this very surprising.

Is it a size thing, a culture thing, or a security thing? I like that it keeps leaders a bit closer to normal life, even if it is partly for the photos.
