PSA: Japanese museums close on Mondays (and a few other things guides skip)

I work in Tokyo and every autumn I meet visitors standing in front of a closed museum on a Monday looking very confused. So, a few things from a local.

Mondays. Most public museums close on Monday. If Monday is a national holiday they usually open and close on Tuesday instead. Check the calendar on the official site, not a blog.

Special exhibitions are separate. The big autumn shows often need their own ticket, sometimes timed and bought online in advance. The permanent collection ticket will not get you in.

Lockers and silence. Big bags go in coin lockers. People are very quiet inside, and phone calls in the gallery will get you looks.

Honestly I'm a bit skeptical of the 'hidden gems' lists too. Many small museums are great, but some are hidden because they open three days a week. Check before you go.
